Patents – American Greatness
We all know what a patent is, in general, but how much do you know about patents and how they have shaped America? Our technology progress here in America have exceeded all other countries combined. Many do not like to hear it, but it is a fact and it has more to do with how the United States moved ahead of other countries economically than any other factor, and still do today.
In this article I will cover many of the progress made by American inventors throughout our relatively short history compared to other countries.
Not all inventions that helped make America great had arisen in the U.S. but also those who had not been invented and patented here put to better use here, as a way to produce steel in large quantities, for example. Originally patented by a British inventor named Henry Bessemer. He invented the Bessemer Converter or Bessemer process.
He obtained his patent in 1855, although the process was known in China in the third century. According to wikipedia.com, main principle "is removal of impurities from the iron by oxidation through air being blown through molten iron. The oxidation also raises the temperature of the iron mass and keeps it molten. "
But ingenious Americans like Andrew Carnegie put it to use and built everything from tin cans to the skyscrapers of railways and ships. Many American inventions were patented in Because of the ability to treat steel faster.
Many people credit Benjamin Franklin for the discovery of electricity. While it is true, electrification is not entirely the same. People like Thomas Edison had established direct current systems, what we know as DC. Nikola Tesla worked against using the AC, or alternating current.
Tesla was Slavic, but a citizen of the United States as he did all his important work on electricity. At the turn of the century, Tesla was already working in fields such as robotics and ballistics. George Westinghouse was a friend of Tesla's and a great competitor to Thomas Edison. George Westinghouse make power for use in more practical ways than inventors.
Westinghouse also invented things and had many patents of his own. People associate him with the apparatus, but he held patents, which had to do with railways as well. He held a patent on a system to make railroad cars back on track after they had been derailed. He even held the patent for inventing the first air-brakes.
Electricity and processing of steel are just two of the major scientific discoveries that made this country great. I only bring these scientific discoveries in this article show you anything about patents. Many people know significant scientific discoveries as nuclear power, automobile, airplane, electronics, broadcasting, agriculture, computers, telephones, air conditioning, cooling, spacecraft, Internet, and so much more, most of whom were either invented in America or put to best use here in America.
But the big Scientific discoveries do represent only a small percentage of all the patents applied for and granted. Most patents derived from one or more of the major scientific discoveries but patents granted for the unique needs or combinations of the major discoveries.
The genius and ingenuity of the American citizen above all others due to a fact that we are a free society. Freedom of speech also means freedom to think. Freedom does lead to a lot of knowledge and discovery.
While some inventions or major scientific discoveries can be attributed to people of foreign countries, nowhere are the discoveries and inventions exploited better through history than the U.S..
For every major scientific discovery, are thousands of patents, which translate it into practical use. Today, patents are still used in an extremely rapid rate. U.S. has not stopped inventing and patenting their ideas. As long American culture continues to foster this innovation, America will be far ahead in all fields of technology, while countries that repress freedom of their citizens will lag far behind.
I hope this article while we only affected a few inventions and discoveries that gives you an insight into why America stay far ahead of the rest of the world through technology. Search by U.S. Patent Office Website and you will discover how many inventions are patented each day.
