Why is it that the revenues raised by the Canadian NHL teams are so much higher that their American counterparts?

I'm throwing this out there because I love to see erroneous references in this forum about how NHL prefers to start the franchise in the U.S. because the Canadian teams do not make money. The opposite is true. From Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: The six Canadian teams representing 20 percent of the 30-team league, accounting for 33.3 percent of all NHL revenues. That means Canadian team fans cough up an estimated 733 million U.S. dollars (all figures U.S.) by the league's $ 2.2 billion revenue. Whether it's a family buys season tickets, purchase individual jerseys, advertisers buy in-arena signage, radio and television companies buy broadcast rights and people parking their cars in the club-owned lots, Canadian teams have economic strength. These facts came to light this week when agents gathered at an NHL Players' Association meeting where league revenues and salary-cap issues were discussed Read the story here: http://www.thestar.com/Sports/article/180345

It is NOT always cold "up" in Canada, so we have more ice. I suggest that you get a map out and you will see that the southern most of Ontario is equal to the northern part of California. Minnesotta is further north than my city. A little geography lesson. It's not just Maple Leafs and Canadiens, which accounts for the bulk of sales in Canada. Calgary Flames have the biggest sale of merchandise for instance. They can not considered to be minor players, nor can the other franchises. I think the next two franchises to be in Canada since the U.S. can not get much support for many of their teams. It is sad to see games with Arenas 1 / 3 full – you do not find that here. Why put the kibosh on selling Phoenix or Nashville team to a Canadian is a mystery to me. You would do much better here. Canada will remain superior in hockey and it is only because four of the original six teams were in the U.S., the NHL's base is there. It should be in Canada and it is time that we had more franchises here. Winnipeg can definitely support a capable Hamilton, or even Kitchener or London.

In today’s rocky economic climate, most households are cutting back wherever they can. And with cable and satellite television costing anywhere from $65-$150 a month (more if you count premium movie channels) many people are making their television sets the first part of their homes to get the ax. But what if there was a way to enjoy thousands of television channels, including hard to find international shows and sports programming, and never pay another monthly cable bill again?
