A 480p Samsung PS 42d5s TV show 720p!? Why?

Hi all, I have an extended definition television, and has recently discovered that some because, setting my Playstation 3 to 720p option actually works with your TV. Could someone who is tech saavy or have knowledge of television let me know why this is so? There is clearly an increase in picture quality when using 720p (the 480p, which is what I was using). So television is clearly doing something, but the problem is, your TV would not be capable of outputing 720p. This Samsung TV is not a very high quality set, and using 720p, makes any white text on the screen is very … Dotty. My question is, does it damage the TV or Playstation 3 by setting it to output. The reason for this concern, as mentioned above, is that TV not 720p compatible. The second question is, why is it showing 720p? Is it a kind of pseudo 720p? Thank you.

A TV can only display at its native resolution. Since this one ED HDTV it can actually (by definition) receive 1080i or 720p signals, but it scales the input signal back to 480p. In general, it is easier to scale down than up. In other words, TV is not outputing 720p. It appears, however, that tv-down scales better than the PS3. Feel free to use it in this state if you believe that quality is better.

Samsung Class LED High Definition TV

In today’s rocky economic climate, most households are cutting back wherever they can. And with cable and satellite television costing anywhere from $65-$150 a month (more if you count premium movie channels) many people are making their television sets the first part of their homes to get the ax. But what if there was a way to enjoy thousands of television channels, including hard to find international shows and sports programming, and never pay another monthly cable bill again?
